Here Comes the Sun…Doo Do Do Do

It is coming.

The days grow warmer.

Nights with no sheets.

It is coming.

It’s a balmy 91 degrees at 8:04 pm. Dulcinea is not impressed. In fact, these two pictures pretty much sum up what she’s been doing for the past week. That and scratching fleas. It’s going to be a long summer.

This Week in Headlines

** Breaking news** Starting today Jodi is covered by health insurance! Sources say that the PPO zero deductible and zero coinsurance at $80/month is a helluva deal. Thanks Purple Fig!

Review: Mortified Nation (http://mortifiednation.com/). Reports are in and it gets two thumbs up! “Wickedly funny!”- Kitty tribune. “Some of it hit really close to home, hilarious!” – Jodi Monthly. Go see it (or at least watch the trailer). In select theaters now!

Eye witnesses report a new piece of furniture in the house. This bench, allegedly made by Grant, showed up under the piano after work one day last week. No one can say for sure where it came from, but investigators are working around the clock to crack the case.

Local weather: Camp Mabry shows a high today of 78* F, while tomorrow’s forecast is promising rain and temperatures peaking in the low 40’s. Meteorologist  Ralph Mullen says “it looks ok from where I’m sitting, but there’s just no rhyme or reason to it…. meowgivemeatomato”

Special report in from our field reporter Dulcinea Kittybear Jones. Let’s hear what she has to report:

Well folks, today is an exciting day, because my humans didn’t all get up and leave first thing in the morning. They lingered in bed so that I could jump up, investigate the perimeter, and jump down again. At one point I was sitting in the middle of the room, taking a bath because I know my girl human loves the sound of my licking, and suddenly I saw her sit up in bed. Before I knew it, there was a large flying projectile coming straight at me. Well I hightailed it out of there for a few minutes until things settled down. Upon my return, I jumped on the bed and received many pets. Silly humans. I plan on spending the rest of my day sleeping and looking longingly out the open window. And that’s it from the field! Back to you-

Well that about wraps it up for us here at the Givens Austin studio. Good afternoon, good evening and good night!

Visitors!

Another great weekend here in Austin. The weather was phenomenal (think 70’s and sunny) and we had visitors! Dale and Peggy took a respite from the New Jersey winter to come and visit us and reminisce about their good ol’ days spent in Texas.  We spent lots of time exploring and touring Austin’s greatest attractions including the Capital building, Mayfield Park, Mt. Bonnell, Barton Springs, the obligatory stop at Whole Foods flagship store, South Congress, Uncommon Objects and more. Of course eating was numero uno priority, and we hit up some great spots like Mothers, Kerby Lane, Casa de Luz, Bouldin Creek, Sagra, and Capital City Bakery….well- that was just me getting a cupcake actually, but it was all yummy! I’ve just decided (as of this morning whilst eating my leftovers) that Sagra has the best tasting food in Austin that I’ve tried, so far. The Margherita pizza is TO DIE FOR!

I even found a real live cowboy moseying around the building. Very patriotic indeed. ImageImageImage

In other life news, I’m on the brink of obsession with Lorde’s album, Pure Heroine. It’s about to reach Kimbra status, and anyone who’s been in my car in the last 8 months knows what that means. Also, Grant has agreed to accompany me to the NCA cheerleading nationals taking place in Dallas on March 1st and 2nd!! #OMG #YOLO #LOLZ it’s going to be so awesome. I was inspired, after watching some cheering videos the other night, to try and do some jumps and splits. It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought. I didn’t fall flat on my face, although I’m certainly not as graceful as I used to be. I also couldn’t walk for the next two days, but hey, no pain no gain, right?

Oh- did I mention I learned how to crochet a granny square? Blanket-haters beware! I’ve got ideas. ImageImage

The best thing that happened to me today was that John said Ralph freaks over tomatoes, so I threw a cherry tomato across the floor, and he started galloping after it. He then proceeded to take 5 minutes to squish the juice all over the place and finally eat it. Pure gold. Filthy. cat. gold.

2014 has begun on an upward swing. The winds of change are a-blowin’! Grant begins his electricians course on Tuesday morning, and he’s going to be a big boy and ‘work’ from 7:30 AM-5PM cada dia! Imagine! 🙂 Money is a little  tight now, but we’re banking on the fact that him being a certified electrician will come in really handy when we buy/renovate then eventually build our house! So that’s exciting. John returned to the Texas homeland this afternoon and brought with him a new furry friend, Ralph. No pics yet, but just picture Samwise the Brave with a concerned look on his face. We’re excited to have a new kitty house-mate!!

Other fun happenings:

We attended the grand-opening of Capital City Bakery today. YUM!

I placed and picked up my first order at Rabbit Food Grocery today. (Thanks, Dad!) Got some mac n cheese, soy curls, and vodka sauce, among other goodies.

We (along with our friends Erica and Dani) journeyed to the top of Mt. Bonnell the other night for a meteor shower. We only saw 2, but it was fun!

It’s that time of year again when you have to take down all of the Christmas decorations. I decided, however, that I liked the ambient light of our christmas tree too much to get rid of it, so I just repurposed it. It’s great! Reduce, reuse, recycle! Ahoy!

The Week in Review

I feel good about this week. It had its minor ups and downs, but I’m going into Friday feeling pretty damn happy. I got to see a three day old kitten drink from a bottle, I joined a volunteer coordinating group at Austin Pets Alive, I finally went out on the town with Erica for some girl time, and I conquered a challenging work project, for starters!

The weather this week has been phenomenal. 80’s and sunny- just how I like it. As New England settles into fall, we’re beginning a perfect east coast summer. 🙂 Dulcinea has found two new favorite spots to hang out. One, as pictured above, is on someone’s laptop case beside the tv, and the other is in the yarn basket! Yes! (That’s secretly why I put it out). She also got to be supervised on the porch for 10 minutes or so.

I have a new favorite smell, starting today. Image

This is a little bottle of heaven, and I want everything in my life to smell like it. In fact, I’m smelling it right now because I just sprayed it all over my room. And my bed. And my clothes.

Kate and I are doing a little project for the APA kitties by crocheting them soft cuddle squares to sit on. I made my first one and wanted to try it out, so I put it down and lo and behold, Dulci sat her little butt right on it! I think she likes it, so I’m going to let her keep that one, but more are in the works! Image

You guys, I’m really excited about excel. Ok, so I’ve been excited about excel for awhile, but I’ve just delved into the realm of VBA and macros and all that fun stuff, and it’s so freakin interesting! I wrote two cool macros for Green Clean today that are going to save the office lots of time doing payroll. I even debugged a line of code that wasn’t working properly. I’m pretty proud of myself I must say. I also got a bunch of new work projects, so the OH MY GOD FIND A JOB ALREADY stress has abated a bit.

Here’s some pics of the boys skateboarding out front from yesterday: (It pays to live on a wannabe cul de sac)

Finally, here’s what’s happening in the dining room right now. Like many nights, Will and John round out the day with a few games of Magic.

Glory Glory Hallelujah!

News Flash: we finally have hot water. The world is good again. It took three and a half weeks, but we got there, in the end. This week hasn’t been very exciting so far, save for my visit to Capital City Bakery yesterday to consume a wonderful rise krispy treat (although the resulting flat bike tire wasn’t so marvelous). I’ve mostly been working and job searching and looking at places to volunteer so I can get out of the house and meet some people! So far I have my sights set on Austin Pets Alive!, who’s volunteer orientation I shall be attending this coming Sunday. Kitty cats, here I come! Grant has been hard at work preparing to take his national massage exam on Friday and also doing the leg work on getting our garden started. Can’t wait to grow some food! Image

Tomorrow I’m planning an early morning bike ride before the heat hits. My new bike tube and I are ready to explore!
