It’s Saturday. Let’s Do Something Fun!

First world problems: there are so many fun things to do here that things keep flying under our radar until it’s too late. Por ejemplo: guess who’s playing tonight? Alt-J and Lord Huron! AHH. Damn it.

Peacocks, parks and puddles. That pretty much sums up my day:

This is what people do when it rains in Texas, right? 🙂

iBike

I will now virtually pat myself on the back for riding 14 miles on my bike this morning! Crazily enough, it didn’t even feel like a workout. Although according to mapmyride, I only gained 229 ft in elevation. I took the bikepath all the way across town to Mopac, then crossed the bridge, hung out at Barton Springs, then crossed back over Congress St, rode up to the capital, and home. It was really nice, despite me incidentally finding myself in random parking lots rather than the path because I missed a turn/detour about five times. That path is a little confusing! Luckily, I had my trusty smart phone to get me back on track.

So we got our utility bill in the mail today. Holy crow! I’ve never had to pay for ALL utilities before, so it was a bit of a shock when it was 400+ buckaroos. There was the deposit to start service (one time fee, thank God), the trash (which we pay for each month! wtf, Austin!?), water, water treatment, waste water, electric, and a bunch of other random junk that I’ve never heard of. Did we actually pay $45 this month to take a crap? Ay yay yay. In related news, I have to give props to this new app Venmo (thanks, Claire), which allows you to transfer money directly into your friends (or roommates) bank accounts. Easy peasy to pay bills/rent/etc. Also, easy to get your rightful dinero for that cucumber you picked up for your pal last week.

I hung out with Erica at a super skeezy laundromat then took some profile pics for her new website. She felt really awkward and it was hilarious. They came out so cute, though! Then we ate brownies and looked like freaks. El Fin.

Glory Glory Hallelujah!

News Flash: we finally have hot water. The world is good again. It took three and a half weeks, but we got there, in the end. This week hasn’t been very exciting so far, save for my visit to Capital City Bakery yesterday to consume a wonderful rise krispy treat (although the resulting flat bike tire wasn’t so marvelous). I’ve mostly been working and job searching and looking at places to volunteer so I can get out of the house and meet some people! So far I have my sights set on Austin Pets Alive!, who’s volunteer orientation I shall be attending this coming Sunday. Kitty cats, here I come! Grant has been hard at work preparing to take his national massage exam on Friday and also doing the leg work on getting our garden started. Can’t wait to grow some food! Tomorrow I’m planning an early morning bike ride before the heat hits. My new bike tube and I are ready to explore!

Free Museum Day

As the title suggests, today was the annual free museum day in Austin. We had grandiose plans to visit the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center, LBJ Presidential Library, Bullock Texas State History Museum, and some museum about the armed forces. Well, some of the household got a rather late start this morning (ahem, should I say- afternoon) so our list was whittled down to the first two. I had been to the Wildflower Center before, and liked it, so thought the boys should see it. Additionally, it was a totally different time of year, so I figured different plants would be in bloom. It was really nice, and, as a bonus,  we also found out where the Velloway bike path is!

Next we ventured to campus to check out the LBJ Library, which, silly me, I thought was a library. Nope, it’s a museum, but it ended up being rather interesting. It had an exhibit on photos from each presidency (back to FDR) taken by their personal photographer. On display where intimate photos of the presidents and first ladies, along with historically relevant events of the time. Also interesting were the portraits of every president (different exhibit) and their wives. I’d say overall the artists have become more skilled and the women have become more attractive since the days of George Washington.

And HEY! It’s your lucky day: BONUS COCKROACH PICTURE!!

The Saga Continues

Oh sweet blanket, how I’ve missed thee. It’s okay to sleep on top of your sheets for weeks at a time, but then comes a night that cools down just perfectly so that you can throw all of your windows open and sleep blissfully under a sheet AND a blanket. That happened to me last night. It was amazing. To all your northerners who are starting to don sweaters and fashionable boots and scarves it aint no thang, but it hasn’t dipped below 80 in our house since we arrived, so it’s kind of a big deal. Today’s weather is absolutely perfect. Breezy and sunny and 85 degrees. I guess after an entire day of flood-inducing torrential downpours, you’re allowed one day of perfection. Image

Last night began Harry Potter movie marathon. We (Kate, Cassandra, 1/2 Jacob and I)  watched movies 1 and 2. They are my least favorite movies of the bunch, so it’s just going to get better from here on out! There were only 3-4 of us, but we had enough food to feed all of Hogwarts. Veggie Booty and mint chocolate cookies and carrots and apples and sesame sticks and grapes and pizza and more cookies and butterbeer and chocolate covered pretzel wands! It was fun. Can’t wait for the next one!

So the saga to obtain hot water continues…

That’s right folks, it’s been 3 weeks and we still don’t have hot water. Now, when it’s 97 degrees out, a luke-warm shower is a little chilly at first, but not so bad. However, when it’s pouring rain or just the right temp so that you’re not always sweating, cold showers suck. We sent a laundry list to our landlord of things we wanted done/fixed around the house. He responded immediately and came over yesterday to light the hot water heater. It didn’t work. He came back over today and try again. It still didn’t work. How we need a new hot water heater, which will be sometime early in the week. Luckily, he seems really awesome. He’s extremely nice and caring, and invested in this property, and super hunky, too, which never hurts 🙂 Also he’s a crossfit trainer, so he’s totally ripped. I might actually have a slight crush on him. Every time he comes over I find myself saying ‘oh no rush on that- it’s not even a big deal…’ even if it’s something that I’ve been complaining about for a week. Ah well…

Dad, thought you’d appreciate this ^

John and Will left this morning for their first Austin Magic tournament. It was like their first day of school with their backpacks and such, so naturally we had to take a photo:

Bats and Graffiti and Visitors and Food!

Who wins for fastest person to come visit? Claire! She was visiting Little Rock, and decided to jaunt down to Austin for a few days. It’s been great to see her and catch up and have a little girl time. As you can see from the video below, we went to see the bats. SO AWESOME! I’ve seen them once before, but it was in March, and definitely not at peak season. It’s slightly past peak right now, but we were not disappointed. Over a million bats came out and we were there for 30 minutes and didn’t even see them all come out! Austin hosts the largest urban bat colony in North America. Dad- you gotta come see this! We’ve just been hanging out, exploring the city, thrift shopping, and eating great food (Casa De Luz tonight). Exciting news of the week: we’re finally getting our gas hooked up tomorrow. No more cold showers!
